On the same day (!) a gravitational wave was observed for the first time. The gravitational waves were registered on September 14, 2015 at 5:51 U.S. East Coast Time (10:51 CET) by both identical detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in Livingston (Louisiana) and Hanford (Washington) in the U.S. (Mitteilung LIGO). The LIGO observatories are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This observation confirms an essential prediction of the General Theory of Relativity formulated by Albert Einstein in 1915.
